The Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program at EFPS
The Kitchen Garden Scheme at our school was a parent-driven initiative that was born in 2010. In collaboration with the school and with the support of its wonderful teachers, an application was made to The Stephanie Alexander Foundation to join the program. Once accepted, the Foundation granted funding towards developing the gardens. At the same time we were able to build the kitchen as part of the capital works rolled out under the BER program.
Now the program is up and running, with the school taking on responsibility for its management. To keep the program running, however, the P&C is committed to making a contribution to the ongoing costs. These include paying for our specialist kitchen and garden staff. In short, the kitchen garden scheme is funded by the parents.
The program has proven itself a fantastic addition to our school's educational program. The kids love it, and its value goes beyond just teaching kids about how to grow food and cook it. It also teaches them about sharing, working together and appreciating that food can be about more than just filling an empty space.
Parent volunteers are always needed in the kitchen so please keep an eye out for when your kids are cooking or contact Sally or Katie, the wonderful kitchen specialists, for more information.
